Rada has been a manufacturer and marketer of hammocks for several decades in the Yucatecan region, and in recent years, worldwide. The question that many ask us is: Where does the hammock come from? Is it truly handmade by local artisans with roots in the Mayan culture?

The answer: yes! And we are proud to be able to be part of a process that is beneficial for communities that are dedicated to the creation of something so deeply rooted in our culture and that is present in our day to day.

We recently visited the artisans in Chumayel (a town near the city of Mérida, the capital of Yucatán, where several of the creators of the hammocks live) and other surrounding municipalities to take photos, talk with the artisans and publicize the processes.

The mayan civilization

The Mayan culture was present for more than 18 centuries and its teachings and learnings are still alive today.

The Mayans were one of the most advanced civilizations in the Americas and some of the vestiges of this culture are still palpable. The Chichen Itzá ruins are a wonder of the modern world. In addition, it is as simple as going out on a small road trip to some of the municipalities in Yucatán to find people who speak the Mayan language fluently.

Recently, in different school sectors of Mérida, the teaching of the Mayan language has been installed as an elective or, in some cases, mandatory, with a view to keeping alive the way of communicating for so long of the ancestors who lived and worked in these lands.
